This cute elephant sculpture is hand carved from kisii soapstone and decorated with black dots that gradually increase in size down the body. Kisii soapstone is mined by hand from one of six quarries in Western Kenya. Carvers cut the large rocks into smaller pieces, then chisel a rough shape into the stone. Women then sand wash the stone pieces and polish them. A clear wax is then applied to accentuate the stone’s natural lustre. The stone carvers of Kisii are one of the many craft groups working with Undugu Fair Trade, one of Trade Aid's partners in Kenya.
